toddler for potty trainingIf you have decided that you would like to try potty training, how do you know if they’re ready? The hardest thing about potty training is learning when it is that they have to go. Are they ready at all to be able to tell you that they have to pee or poop? Here are some ways to help you tell if they are ready. This isn’t an all inclusive list and they don’t have to be doing all of them to know. You are looking for an overall sign that they are learning to be independent and an understanding of what is happening when they eliminate.

Physically:

1.    Are they coordinated enough to move around on their own? Can they walk or run? Even if they can crawl, they may be ready.

2.    Are they regular? Do they poop on schedule or at least predictably? Are the stools well-formed? If so, this is a good sign they are ready for it.

3.    Do they urinate a lot at one time or is it just a trickle? Do they fill their diaper when they pee? If they are urinating a fair bit at once, they might be ready.

4.    Are they able to stay dry for decent amounts of time? If they can stay dry for several hours this means that their body is learning how to hold urine in their bladder. This will make it easier.

Behaviorally:

1.    Do they get upset when they have a dirty diaper? If they are able to express that they are uncomfortable when the diaper is wet or dirty then it very well could be time for them to be potty trained.

2.    Do they have an interest in using the potty? This would be a good time to start.

3.    Are they able to pull their pants up or down?

4.    Are they able to sit in one place for a couple minutes? This will make it easier to potty train.

5.    Do they give you some kind of sign that they are dirtying their diaper? This can be verbal sign of some kind or even just a physical sign such as squatting or making a face like they are concentrating on something.

6.    Are they wanting to do things for themselves? This is a really good sign that they are ready.

7.    When they do something for themselves, do they seem proud of it? This is an excellent sign.

8.    Also, if they are at a point where they are willing to work with you and haven’t yet reached that “terrible twos” stage where they say “no” to everything then you might be at a good place in time.

Some other things to look for are if they can follow instructions, and are they able to tell you before they go pee or poop? If there is any ability to communicate between the two of you, it is a good time to start potty training. Remember to have patience while going through this time and be supportive. This is a really important time for the child. They will go through feelings of embarrassment when they missed their chance. They will feel frustration when they want to go but can’t. They will also feel an enormous amount of pride when they do finally go in the potty. Feel free to go through all of these things with them and be fully supportive. Potty training is a great time to bring about some more bonding between you and your child and will help you in learning how to communicate better.
