Out With the New and in With the Old Baby Potty Training

babyIf you have a new baby at home, you can start potty training now.  As early as birth, an infant can be potty trained.  This method is the Infant Potty Training method, or IPT.  In the last several decades, traditionally, potty training does not begin until 18-36 months.  In some countries, they start baby potty training as early as birth to 6 months.  That may sound just amazing to you, but what is truly amazing is that it is a tried and true method of early potty training.  There is a window of possibility for IPT between birth and 6 months that closes and typically does not reopen again until around 8-12 months.  Babies can learn many things in the first months of life.  Potty training at this early age is merely a way of allowing them to realize when they need to go, and letting you know when that time is.

In the first few months after birth, you are bonding outside the womb with your new baby.  You will get to know your baby’s habits and routines very quickly.  This includes when they need to "go".  Most generally, upon awakening, an infant will go potty in their diaper.  This is a great time to start working on giving them cues to understanding what is happening when they urinate or have a bowel movement.   Using sounds a baby can recognize and will soon imitate will work as a cue for them to know when they are about to go potty.  After awakening, whether the diaper is soiled or not, try holding your infant on a potty chair and making related sounds while they are on it.  Most likely, the baby will use the potty, and it will be a fun baby potty training time instead of a stressful time for both of you.

The IPT method is a better method of baby potty training, as infants are more receptive to this training than when they become toddler age.  The toddler years are the stubborn years when virtually everything is "no".   If you have already been potty training when they were a baby, by the time they reach the stubborn toddler years, they are already potty trained and are already used to it.  This makes the process much less of a hassle and more like second nature to them.
