Baby on towelNowadays, parents are conditioned to think that potty training starts at 2 years.  Research, however, has proven that infants exercise some form of control over their bladder functions, which makes it possible to potty train an infant.

When it is achieved, many benefits are afforded to the parents and guardians.  First, the negative environmental impact of disposable diapers is lessened.  In fact, an average baby will use up to 6,000 diapers for the 30 months before conventional potty training starts. This in turn generates 2 tons of waste that make up the third largest single consumer item that pollutes the Earth!  Add in the fact that it takes 500 years for each diaper to decompose and you have a strong case to potty train an infant.

Second, the cost of keeping a baby in diapers 24/7 can be a great strain on the family budget.  Indeed, conservative estimates put the amount at $3000 worth of diapers by the time baby reaches the conventional age of potty training.

Add in the cost of medical care for the instances when diaper rash and a sundry of other illnesses brought by overuse of diapers and you have more reasons to potty train your baby.

Third and most important, infant potty training will improve communication between mother and child.  (Or father and child, for that matter) This is because communication is an important key to the success of the exercise.  The caregivers have to learn the body language and facial expressions of the infant to determine the time to go “poo-poo” or “wee-wee”.

Also, children can learn and hone communication skills by expanding their vocabulary, teaching them to become responsive to verbal and visual stimuli, and encouraging teamwork with the caregiver.  In this way, children can interact better and all because you decided to  potty train your infant .  Your baby, to be exact.

Indeed, in a society where loving independence is encouraged, where money is tight due to the recession, and where good communication is essential for good relationships, the decision to potty train an infant provides for great benefits no parent should miss.
