Three Methods of Potty Training
January 2nd, 2009 Filed Under Baby Potty Training
There have been a lot of questions lately about potty training, and when to potty train. There are quite a few methods available depending on preferences and parenting styles. Here are some things that are helpful when trying decide about potty training. The three methods focused on in this article are infant potty training, readiness potty training, and potty training in a day.
Infant potty training takes the approach that an infant can learn about toilet training even before the infant is aware of bodily functions. This method demands more time of the parents, but it could reap rewards when the child is trained at 18 months old instead of 3. As part of this method, the parent takes the child to the toilet every time it is suspected that the child may have to eliminate. As part of this routine, the child is put on a regular feeding and sleeping schedule so the parents can time when the child will go on the toilet. A child then has a learned behavior of knowing whentopottytrain on their own.
There are quite a few doctors today that will tell most parents when to potty train is to wait until the child seems to be ready. The signs would be that they can pull up their pants on their own, express vocally that they need to use the toilet, and they can feel the need for privacy by hiding when they need to use the toilet. If the child is not ready to potty train, and seems to feel forced into it, it can cause regression, and possible psychological damage.
Another less well known method that has been gaining popularity, especially on daytime TV is the potty training in a day method. There is one woman who has a day camp where children come to learn about how to go on the potty. The children are given salty snacks and sugary drinks to encourage them to eliminate frequently. They are also given sweet rewards when they perform as requested. The children are also encouraged to take care of everything themselves. If they make a mess on the floor, they clean it up. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions.
There are quite a few methods to choose from when considering these things. Thinking about when to potty train can be difficult, frustrating, and confusing for both parent and child. As long as the parent selects the right method for parent and child, it can be very rewarding.
