Potty training has become a much debated topic in the western world. Every parent, psychologist, and medical professional seems to have his or her own specific opinion regarding this rite of passage. As a parent, you have probably been bombarded by all sorts of theories regarding toilet training, and you might be afraid or confused about instructing your child about toilet training.

In reality, all of this worrisome trepidation on your part may not be necessary. A variety of different techniques have been employed by different cultures and countries which yield healthy, positive results. In the end, the method you choose may depend upon the parental style with which you are most comfortable.

Most familiarly, in the western world, there is a tendency to wait and engage in baby potty training when the child is ready. This concept seems rooted in the belief that children will eventually mature to the point where they desire individuality and further character development. Once they exhibit this desire, it is believed that they will respond positively to toilet training.

A major component to this school of thinking is the notion that infants are simply incapable of grasping the concept of baby potty training. It is not until they age, and presumably mature, that they will appreciate the need to learn this process. As such, potty training might not begin until about 18 to 24 months of age.

However, this is not the only way in which children have been toilet trained, and it is possible to begin teaching them much earlier. This is a common practice across the world, and it even has a relatively recent history in the Western world. Currently though, it is not something which is practiced as widely by western countries.

An important premise to this method of baby potty training is the fact that infants respond very well to many new stimuli and experiences. In the early stages of aging, their brains may be far more capable of learning new behaviors and concepts than we may realize. When put in the framework of toilet training, it can equate to a child learning how to use a toilet as early as one or two months of age.

In the end, you should feel comfortable with the method of training you choose. This will make the process of baby potty training less stressful and more natural. In turn, this can help to increase the likelihood of success for you and your child.
