What Is Infant Potty Training?

Mother and babyInfant potty training is a method that has been used by people all over the globe throughout history to train their baby how to use the toilet at a very early age.

The goal is to have your baby potty trained by the time they are 6 months old. If you think that it is an impossible task, consider that it is being done successfully in over 75 countries worldwide. It hasn’t been a minority of the people who are doing this, either. It has been done by the general populace of those countries for most of their existence. Those countries throughout history have not been using diapers. They have instead learned how to tell when their infant is getting ready to urinate and will move them to the proper place so they can "take care of business". Many times this is done right from the time of birth and diapers or nappies are not used at all and, in fact, are not even available.

Infant potty training is called many different things. It is sometimes called ‘natural infant hygiene’ or ‘potty whispering’. The most accurate, however, is ‘elimination communication’ because this is, essentially, what it really is.

It involves knowing when it is that your infant is most likely to urinate. This takes studying your baby’s tendencies and recognizing what times or moments during the day they are most likely to go potty. Are there events that they usually potty after, such as eating or drinking? How long after eating or drinking is it that they go? Is there a movement that they make or an expression that they have before they pee? Is there a certain time of the day? It takes learning and recognizing when these moments are and then holding them over the area that they are supposed to eliminate in.

The process also helps the baby to recognize the physical sensations they feel just before they urinate. They then are able to realize that they need to go to this certain place where they pee or poop and will find someway to communicate with their parent that they have to go. The baby ’speaks’ and the parent ‘listens’ and are able to, together, potty train the infant.

Most cultures will have the infant fully potty trained well before their 2nd birthday.

There are certain clothes that the children wear to make it possible for a quick movement over the place because you may not have much time. These children will normally wear clothes with a slit in the back so that they have easy and quick access. The use of diapers is typically avoided while trying to accomplish this because it can be time consuming to get the diapers off when you need to act quickly. At the beginning, the window of opportunity is very small and you need to be able to get the baby over the toilet quickly. There are many, though, who are able to successfully train their infant to use the potty and still keep them in diapers in between trips to the toilet in case there are any accidents.

There are many advantages to training your infant to use the potty at an early age. It takes a little bit of work, observation skills, and, sometimes, a quick reaction time. It will result, though, in your child being more comfortable because they no longer have to wear a wet or soiled diaper which also reduces the instances of diaper rash dramatically.

Infant potty training will reduce the amount of waste in landfills because of the amount of diapers a typical child will go through. Saving money as you don’t have to go buy diapers every week or several times a month. It will also help strengthen the bond between parent and child as they are able to learn to communicate more. Infant potty training is a natural and normal method that has been used by people all over the world throughout history and is sure to work if you are willing to put a little time into it.
